Short History of St. Mary Catholic Church in McGehee, Arkansas
St. Mary's roots reach back to the early 1900s, sown by Rev. Matthew Saettele, a Benedictine missionary who first brought the sacraments to the McGehee area. The original church, St. Winand, opened its doors on May 17, 1908, giving the small Catholic community its first true home.
As faith took root and the community grew, a rectory was added, and in 1917, the Benedictine Sisters of Fort Smith opened a Catholic school and convent to nurture the next generation. The brick St. Winand Church weathered the devastating 1927 Mississippi River flood and went on serving McGehee Catholics for decades, until the present St. Mary Catholic Church rose in its place in 1957. The former school and convent still serve the parish today as its hall.
Today, St. Mary carries that same perseverance forward, served in cooperation with St. Mark in Monticello and Holy Child of Jesus in Dumas, a living reminder of generations who kept the faith in the Arkansas Delta.
